In this book, we specifically address the keeping of African pygmy hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris), which are members of the subfamily Erinaceinae and can legally be kept as pets in most countries/states. The African pygmy hedgehog lives on the African continent in dry, arid and/or rocky regions. It avoids humid areas. This hedgehog usually spends its day hidden in rock crevices, under tree trunks, under large stones and the like, because the animal is nocturnal and comes out in the evening.African pygmy hedgehogs are not considered endangered and are not threatened with extinction. Such a classification has already been made by the IUCN, whose abbreviation stands for International Union for Conservation of Nature. The African pygmy hedgehog has received the classification Least Concern.Hedgehogs are solitary animals, so keeping them alone is recommended. In the wild, hedgehogs go their separate ways and only meet with a conspecific when it is mating season.
