Who Should Buy?

Suitable For
  • Hobbyist Printers

Ideal for hobbyists who need a reliable filament for crafting detailed 3D models and prototypes with excellent surface finish.

  • Model Makers

Perfect for model makers looking to create intricate designs, as HIPS provides good support and is easy to work with.

  • Educational Use

Great for educational purposes in schools or workshops, allowing students to explore 3D printing without complex requirements.

Not Suitable For
  • High-Temperature Printing

Not suitable for users requiring materials that withstand high temperatures, as HIPS has lower thermal resistance compared to others.

  • Cost-Conscious Users

May not be ideal for budget-sensitive users since HIPS can be more expensive compared to standard PLA or ABS filaments.

  • Outdoor Projects

Not recommended for outdoor applications due to its susceptibility to moisture and lower UV resistance, affecting durability.

Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question: What is the recommended print temperature for this filament?

Answer: The recommended print temperature is between 210 - 230°C.
  • Question: Is this filament compatible with all 3D printers?

Answer: Yes, it is compatible with most standard spool-based 3D printers including popular brands like Bambu Lab, Creality, and Prusa.
  • Question: What is the weight and diameter of this filament?

Answer: The filament has a diameter of 1.75mm and a net weight of 1kg.
  • Question: Is it food safe?

Answer: Regardless of the filament type that you choose, 3D printing, in today's standards, is not typically food safe. A 3D printer lays down lines. These lines are not perfectly flat and bacteria can grow in these cracks. Additionally, brass nozzles used in the hot end of a printer may contain lead.
  • Question: Can I use this as support material for PETG or PLA?

Answer: I've never tried it personally, but all of the research I've done says no. HIPS works at a higher temp, so PLA won't stick to it. Plus the stuff that dissolves HIPS will dissolve PLA.
  • Question: What bed surface and temperature should be used?

Answer: HIPS filament prints just like ABS. ABS can print on a variety of surfaces such as glass, glass with glue, kapton tape, PET tape, blue tape, PEI, and more. 110 degrees is a good bed temperature.
  • Question: Can I make replacement model parts and use the 'ultra thin model cement' solvent to glue them together?

Answer: Hi Ryan - Not sure which solvent is the ultra thin model cement glue. It may work. Do you have a brand name or somewhere we can see your glue? I believe most thin cement glues are used for polystyrene plastic. HIPS filament does fall under this category, but again I would like to see what cement glue you are using.
  • Question: Not familiar with HIPS, can this be used as an interface layer for PETG models? Looking for a good easy to remove support filament for PETG printing.

Answer: I have not been successful with HIPS and PETG, but I haven't played with PETG much. It works great with ABS as an easy break away and you can also dissolve it with limonene.
  • Question: Do I need a special nozzle or will brass do?

Answer: You do not need a special nozzle. A brass nozzle is fine.
  • Question: How long for this to dissolve in water and about how long in an ultrasonic cleaner with just water?

Answer: Dow makes a dissolvable in water good for any filament. Pricey but great results almost right away. I had no luck with HIPS. The agent also dissolved my print.
  • Question: What is the hub hole diameter?

Answer: Hi Mark. The hub hole diameter is 56mm. Let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks.
  • Question: What is it best used with? I can't get it to properly work with flexible filament :(

Answer: Are you asking what is HIPS filament best used with as a support structure? You can use HIPS filament with ABS filament.

GizmoDorks 3D Printing Filament Editorial Review

** Gizmo Dorks 1.75mm HIPS Filament** The Gizmo Dorks 1.75mm HIPS Filament has garnered a reputation among users for its remarkable versatility and functionality, particularly as a support material in dual-extruder 3D printing setups. Customers have Consistently praised its durability and longevity, with some reporting that a single roll can last for over a year of regular use, especially when utilized for support structures during ABS printing. One standout feature of HIPS is its compatibility with ABS plastic, which allows for seamless layering. Users have noted that prints can be executed effectively with HIPS as a support material, as it does not bond well with ABS. This unique characteristic facilitates the easy removal of supports, leaving behind a smooth finish, particularly when custom supports are employed. The capability to create elaborate support structures has been described as a significant advantage for achieving more complex designs and clean outputs. However, while HIPS excels as a support filament, it does come with its challenges. Customers have mentioned that achieving a solid initial adhesion to the print bed requires precise temperature control. Users recommend setting the heated bed to around 85ºC for optimal adhesion and ensuring a correct distance from the nozzle to minimize warping issues. Some have found that printing a raft or a thicker first layer can mitigate potential adhesion problems, enhancing the overall print experience. It is worth noting that HIPS tends to be somewhat brittle, especially in tall wall prints, which might limit its use as a sole filament for structural applications. The filament can warp when used in prolonged or extensive printing tasks, leading some customers to suggest that it should primarily be reserved for use as support, rather than for end-use prints. In conclusion, the Gizmo Dorks HIPS Filament is praised for its effectiveness as a support material when coupled with ABS, offering users a reliable product that simplifies the 3D printing process. Its flexibility and ease of removal, combined with a learning curve for optimal usage, make it a staple for those operating dual-extruder printers; however, users should be mindful of its limitations and potential challenges to ensure the best results. **
