The Grizzly G9983Z drum sander is a well built, impressive tool that will save significant time and effort in sanding and preparing wood. The dust port on the machine points the wrong way, so a small modification to change the direction is recommended to make dust collection more effective. The sander is quiet, powerful and is able to remove about 1/8 inch of material with its 220 grit sander in about 4 passes. The finish created by the sander is impressive and there were no issues with the wood being thinner at the ends than in the middle. It was found to be well suited to building custom cabinets, including for red oak door frames, as well as converting carpeted stairs into finished oak. One downside is that the belt requires some effort to move wood around, particularly if the pieces are run on an angle. A "small cheap laser" can be attached to the edges of the belt area to create a laser pointer to provide proper alignment. One user had issues with the "drive shaft for the belt feed" snapping off after only four uses, which was attributed to poor quality steel, but Grizzly was able to fix the issue. Another user broke the plastic gear that connects the belt motor to the chain via a worm drive several times, and replacement gears are no longer available. However, Grizzly offers a whole motor, gear and chain sprocket assembly for $180. The machine makes a lot of dust, so good dust collection is essential.
